Aligned with the vision of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Andalas University, the vision of the Master's Program in Biology at FMIPA Andalas University is to become an internationally renowned Master's program in Biology that studies, develops, and conserves the biodiversity of the Sumatra region by 2028.

To achieve this vision, the Master's Program in Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University has established the following four missions:

Untuk mewujudkan visi dan melaksanakan misi tersebut di atas, tujuan strategis (strategic goals) Prodi S2 Biologi FMIPA UNAND telah ditetapkan untuk masing-masing misi. Dari keempat misi telah ditetapkan empat tujuan strategis sebagai berikut:

1.  Menghasilkan lulusan yang berkualitas dalam mengkaji, mengembangkan, dan menyelamatan bidang biodiversitas Sumatera yang mendapat pengakuan pada tingkat Nasional dan Internasional.
2.  Menghasilkan publikasi pada jurnal internasional yang bereputasi dan perolehan HaKI/Paten dalam bidang Biodiversitas Sumatera
3.  Meningkatkan implementasi hasil penelitian dalam bidang biodiversitas dan konservasi untuk kesejahteraan masyarakat dan keselamatan lingkungan

Sasaran Program Studi :

Berdasarkan visi, misi dan tujuan maka disusun sasaran dan strategi pencapaian yang dituangkan dalam Renstra Prodi S2 Biologi FMIPA UNAND 2016-2019 (Revisi), seperti terlampir dalam Borang 3A. Renstra Prodi S2 Biologi FMIPA UNAND 2016-2019 (Revisi) ini merupakan rangkaian kedua dari Renstra Jangka Panjang Prodi S2 Biologi UNAND dari tahun 2009 sampai 2028.

TUJUAN
Berdasarkan visi dan misi yang telah dirumuskan, maka tujuan strategis (strategic goals) FMIPA jangka menengah, dirumuskan sebagai berikut:

1. Menghasilkan lulusan yang berdaya saing tinggi secara nasional dan mendapat pengakuan pada tingkat Internasional.
2. Meningkatkan produktivitas penelitian dasar dalam mengkaji dan mengembangkan potensi sumberdaya alam tropis untuk menunjang pembangunan berkelanjutan.
3. Meningkatkan implementasi hasil penelitian dalam rangka transformasi ilmu pengetahuan kepada masyarakat.
4. Memperluas jaringan kerjasama yang saling menguntungkan dengan berbagai lembaga pemerintah/swasta di dalam dan luar negeri untuk produktivitas kegiatan tridharma perguruan tinggi.

TARGETS

The targets of the Biology Study Program are formulated based on the Medium-Term Strategic Plan of the Biology Study Program 2016-2019 (Revision), which is the second series of the long-term plan of the Biology Study Program from 2009 to 2028. The milestones of the long-term achievements of the Biology Study Program are as follows:

1. The first stage is the period of 2009-2013. This period is a stage of achievement in improving the study program, developing human resources, and fulfilling national standards for higher education.
2. The second stage is the period of 2014-2018. During this period, the study program is expected to achieve national reputation and competitiveness.
3. The third stage is the period of 2019-2023. During this period, the study program prepares to achieve regional (ASEAN) reputation by fulfilling regional quality standards.
4. The fourth and final stage is the period of 2024-2028. During this period, the Biology Study Program must achieve regional/ASEAN reputation by preparing regional quality standards, thus gaining recognition at the regional/ASEAN level.

SASARAN

Sasaran PS S1 Biologi disusun berdasarkan Rencana Strategis Jangka Menengah Prodi Biologi 2016-2019 (Revisi), yang merupakan rangkaian kedua dari rencana jangka panjang Prodi Biologi dari tahun 2009 sampai 2028. Tonggak-tonggak pencapaian (milestones) jangka panjang Prodi Biologi adalah sebagai Berikut:

1. Tahap pertama adalah periode 2009-2013. Periode ini merupakan tahap capaian pembenahan prodi danpengembangan sumberdaya manusia serta pemenuhan standar nasional pendidikan tinggi,
2. Tahap kedua adalah periode 2014-2018. Pada periode ini dilakukan untuk capaian berdaya saing pada tingkat nasional, Pada periode ini program studi diharuskan mencapai reputasi nasional.
3. Tahap ketiga adalah periode 2019-2023. Pada periode ini, merupakan persiapan menuju reputasi regional (ASEAN), berupa pemenuhan standar-standar mutu regional.
4. Tahap keempat/terakhir adalah periode 2024-2028. Pada periode ini, Prodi Biologi harus mencapai reputasi regional/ASEAN dengan menyiapkan standar mutu regional sehingga mendapat pengakuan pada tingkat Regional/ASEAN.

History of Biology Program

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), originally called the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPIA), was established on Wednesday, September 7, 1955 (20 Muharram 1375) along with the Faculty of Medicine in Bukittinggi. Its establishment was based on the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching, and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 41007/Kab. dated July 14, 1955. Then, Andalas University (UNAND) was officially established on Thursday, September 13, 1956 (8 Safar 1376) in Bukittinggi. At the time of UNAND's inauguration, FIPIA did not have a Biology Department and only had two departments: Exact Sciences and Geology.

The regional upheaval popularly known as PRRI-PERMESTA had stopped almost all activities at UNAND, and even FIPIA had to be closed. In 1959, UNAND's activities were gradually reactivated, but not in Bukittinggi but in Padang, which consisted of the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Medicine, PTPG/FKIP, Faculty of Law and Society, and Faculty of Economics. Until 1961, FIPIA was unable to start its activities due to the absence of lecturers and students. To reactivate or rehabilitate FIPIA, another effort was made, namely by opening the Biology Department as one of the components that was possible at that time.

The establishment of the Biology Department in 1962 was based solely on the sincerity of one of the lecturers at the Faculty of Medicine at Andalas University, Drs. Wildan Yatim Lubis, who dared to coordinate it. He was an alumnus of the Biology Department at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). In 1964, he was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine, Padjajaran University, Bandung.

The birth of the Biology Department was in the context of rehabilitating FIPIA in a very distressing condition. It was born without any permanent lecturers, without administrative offices, lecture halls or laboratories. Between 1962-1963, administrative office activities were carried out in one of the Secretariat rooms of UNAND at the intersection of Pondok Street. In the 1970s, the Biology Department, together with the Pharmacy and Chemistry Departments, began to establish itself as a relatively prestigious institution of higher education, along with the addition of classrooms, laboratories, libraries, and other educational facilities located on the Air Tawar campus. In 1981, the Biology Department moved to the Ulu Gadut campus. In 1982, the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Natural Sciences (FIPIA) changed its name to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, abbreviated FMIPA.

The Biology Department at Andalas University has been gradually increasing the number of academic staff members who are alumni with achievements. In line with this, teaching staff have been sent to continue their S2 and/or S3 studies both domestically and abroad. Collaborations with both domestic (PEMDA) and international parties have been able to expand and improve the human resources of the Biology Department. In 1974, a research collaboration on primates and mammalogy was established with Japanese researchers, and in 1981, a research collaboration on the Sumatran Rainforest was continued between the research group from Andalas University (mostly from the Biology Department) and Japanese researchers under the Sumatra Nature Study (SNS) organization, which was later renamed the Sumatra Nature Study Center (SNSC). These activities have had a profound impact on the teaching staff's understanding of field research techniques, particularly in the taxonomy and ecology of tropical plants and animals.

These programs were continued with the next collaboration project, called the Field Biology Research and Training (FBRT). Both of these programs made a significant contribution to the development of human resources, resulting in the production of several doctoral graduates and the addition of laboratory equipment. At present, there is still good cooperation between the Biology Department and the Japanese parties. In 1991, the Biology Department, which was located in Ulu Gadut, finally moved to the NEW Limau Manis Campus.

In 1996, the S2 study program was opened with a focus on ecology. In 1998, the Biology Department received Accreditation A, which was a remarkable achievement for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Andalas University. In 1998, the Biology Department also received a grant from Due-like to improve the quality of the curriculum, teaching staff, teaching and learning processes, and academic atmosphere. In line with the development of the new curriculum, in 2002, the Biology Department implemented a Competency-Based Curriculum.

In 2003, thanks to the hard work of the Biology Department's academic community, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Andalas University won the TPSDP Batch III grant to develop study programs in accordance with the new paradigm and Long-Term Higher Education Development Framework. Furthermore, in this year, as a continuation of the 2002 program, the Biology Department, along with other departments under Andalas University, received a grant for Sumatran Plant Conservation from the President of the Republic of Indonesia. The aim of the program was to establish the Andalas University Botanical Garden and the Tropical Plant Study and Utilization Center, as a development of the Biology Education and Research Forest (HPPB) and the Arboretum. In 2004, the Rector established the organizational structure of the Andalas University Botanical Garden, consisting of the HPPB unit, the Arboretum, and the Medicinal Plant Garden. The units directly related to the Biology Department are the HPPB and Arboretum units. In this year, several Japanese researchers who had previously been involved in the SNS and FBRT collaboration programs initiated a new collaboration between Andalas University and Kagoshima University & Kyoto University in Japan. The form of cooperation contained in the Memorandum of Understanding includes student and researcher exchanges and research collaborations.

Furthermore, in accordance with the wishes of the Academic Community of the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Andalas University to be recognized as a high-quality institution, based on the Decree of the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT) No: 4301/SK/BAN-PT/Akred-XI/S/XI/2017, the Department of Biology at FMIPA UNAND has been able to maintain its accredited A status and achievements. Andalas University has also been awarded an A accreditation status based on the Decree of the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT) No: 039/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/I/2014. 

Lintasan Sejarah Biologi

 Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA) yang pada mulanya disebut Fakultas Ilmu Pasti dan Ilmu Alam (FIPIA), berdiri pada hari Rabu tanggal 7 September 1955 (20 Muharam 1375) bersamaan dengan Fakultas Kedokteran di Bukittinggi. Pendiriannnya didasarkan atas Surat Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan, Pengajaran dan Kebudayaan Republik Indonesia No. 41007/Kab. tertanggal 14 Juli 1955. Kemudian Universitas Andalas (UNAND) diresmikan berdiri pada hari Kamis tanggal 13 September 1956 (8 Sjafar 1376) di Bukittinggi. Pada waktu peresmian UNAND, FIPIA belum memiliki Jurusan Biologi dan baru memiliki dua jurusan yaitu Ilmu Pasti dan Geologi.

Pergolakan daerah yang populer dengan nama PRRI-PERMESTA telah menghentikan hampir semua aktivitas di UNAND, bahkan FIPIA terpaksa ditutup. Pada tahun 1959 kegiatan UNAND secara bertahap diaktifkan kembali tetapi bukan di Bukittinggi melainkan di Padang yang terdiri dari Fakultas Pertanian, Fakultas Kedokteran, PTPG/FKIP. Fakultas Hukum dan Pengetahuan Masyarakat, serta Fakultas Ekonomi. FIPIA sampai tahun 1961 belum dapat memulai kegiatannya sebab ketiadaan dosen dan mahasiswa. Untuk mengaktifkan kembali atau merehabilitasi FIPIA terpaksa dicarikan usaha lain yaitu dengan membuka Jurusan Biologi sebagai salah satu komponen yang memungkinkan pada waktu itu.

Berdirinya Jurusan Biologi pada tahun 1962 hanya bermodalkan keikhlasan hati salah seorang dosen Fakultas Kedokteran UNAND yaitu Drs. Wildan Yatim Lubis yang memberanikan diri tampil untuk mengkoordinirnya. Beliau adalah seorang alumnus Bagian Biologi, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). Pada tahun 1964 beliau pindah tugas ke Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Pajajaran Bandung.

Lahirnya Jurusan Biologi dalam rangka merehabilitasi FIPIA dalam kondisi yang sangat memprihatinkan. Kelahirannya tanpa seorangpun dosen tetap, tanpa gedung perkantoran dan perkuliahan maupun laboratorium. Selang tahun 1962-1963 kegiatan administrasi perkantoran dilakukan pada salah satu ruangan Sekretariat UNAND di perempatan Jalan Pondok. Pada tahun 1970-an barulah Jurusan Biologi menampakan diri bersama Jurusan Farmasi dan Kimia sebagi lembaga pendidikan tinggi yang relatif bergengsi seiring dengan penambahan ruang kuliah, laboratorium, perpustakaan dan fasilitas pendidikan lainnya yang bertempat di Kampus Air Tawar. Pada tahun 1981 Jurusan Biologi pindah ke Kampus Ulu Gadut. Pada tahun 1982 Fakultas Ilmu Pasti Ilmu Alam (FIPIA) berganti nama menjadi Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam yang disingkat dengan FMIPA.

Jurusan Biologi secara perlahan menambah jumlah staf akademik dari alumninya yang berprestasi. Sejalan dengan ini juga dilakukan pengiriman staf pengajar untuk melanjutkan studi S2 dan atau S3 di dalam dan luar Negeri. Kerjasama dengan pihak dalam negeri (PEMDA) dan luar negeri mampu memperluas dan meningkatkan sumber daya staf Jurusan Biologi. Pada tahun 1974 telah dijalin kerjasama penelitian tentang tentang Primat dan Mamalogi dengan peneliti Jepang. Selanjutnya pada tahun 1981 dilanjutkan kerjasama penelitian tentang Hutan Hujan Tropik Sumatera antara kelompok peneliti Universtas Andalas (sebahagian besar dari Jurusan Biologi) dengan peneliti dari pihak Jepang di bawah payung organisasi Sumatra Nature Study (SNS) atau Pusat Kajian Alam Sumatera yang selanjutnya dirubah namanya menjadi Sumatra Nature Study Center (SNSC). Kegiatan ini memberikan kesan yang mendalam bagi staf pengajar tentang teknik penilitian lapangan (Field Biology) tumbuhan dan hewan tropika khususnya taksonomi dan ekologi. Kemudian program ini dilanjutkan dengan proyek kerjasama berikutnya dengan nama Field Biology Research and Training (FBRT). Dari kedua program ini memberikan kontribusi yang berarti dalam pengembangan sumber daya manusia, yaitu menghasilkan beberapa doktor dan penambahan peralatan laboratorium. Pada saat ini masih terjalin kerjasama yang baik antara jurusan biologi dengan pihak Jepang. Pada tahun 1991 Jurusan Biologi yang berlokasi di Ulu Gadut akhirnya pindah ke Kampus BARU Limau Manis.

Pada tahun 1996, Program Studi S2 dibuka dengan pemusatan Ekologi. Pada tahun 1998 Jurusan Biologi mendapatkan Akreditasi A yang merupakan prestasi tersendiri bagi Jurusan Biologi FMIPA Unand. Pada tahun 1998 ini juga Jurusan Biologi mendapat grant Due-like untuk memperbaiki mutu kurikulum, staf pengajar, proses belajar mengajar dan suasana akademik. Sejalan dengan berkembangnya kurikulum baru. Pada tahun 2002, Jurusan Biologi menerapkan Kurikulum Berbasis Kompetensi.

Pada tahun 2003 berkat kerja keras sivitas akademika Jurusan Biologi, FMIPA Unand berhasil memenangkan grant TPSDP Batch III untuk pengembangan program studi sesuai dengan paradigma baru dan Kerangka Pengembangan Perguruan Tinggi Jangka Panjang. Selanjutnya pada tahun ini, sebagai lanjutan program 2002, Jurusan Biologi bersama dengan jurusan lainnya di bawah Universitas Andalas mendapat HIBAH Konservasi Tumbuhan Sumatera dari Presiden RI. Tujuan dari program tersebut adalah membentuk Kebun Raya Universitas Andalas dan Pusat Pengkajian dan Pemanfaatan Tumbuhan Tropika, sebagai pengembangan dari Hutan Pendidikan dan Penelitian Biologi (HPPB) dan Arboretum. Pada tahun 2004, Rektor telah membentuk struktur organisasi Kebun Raya Universitas Andalas yang terdiri dari unit HPPB, Arboretum dan Kebun Tanaman Obat. Unit yang terkait langsung dengan Jurusan Biologi adalah unit HPPB dan Arboretum. Pada tahun ini, beberapa peneliti Jepang yang pernah terlibat pada program kerjasama SNS dan FBRT memprakarsai kerjasama baru antara Universitas Andalas dengan Kagoshima University & Kyoto University Jepang. Bentuk kerjasama yang tertuang dalam “Memorandum of Understanding” antara lain: pertukaran mahasiswa, pertukaran peneliti dan kerjasama riset.

Selanjutnya sesuai dengan keinginan Civitas Akademika Jurusan Biologi FMIPA Universitas Andalas untuk tetap dipandang sebagai institusi yang berkualitas, maka berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi (BAN-PT) No:4301/SK/BAN-PT/Akred-XI/S/XI/2017 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNAND mampu kembali mempertahankan status & prestasinya terakreditasi A. Universitas Andalas juga mendapatkan predikat terakreditasi A berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi (BAN-PT) No:039/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/I/2014.

Early History

The Master's Program/S2 Biology Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) was established in 1994. The establishment of the S2 Biology Program was in response to the need for further education, as at that time, there was no S2 Biology program in Sumatra. With the agreement of the faculty council, the Biology Department opened the Master's Program/S2 Biology, which was initiated by several professors, including Prof. Dr. Nurdin Muhammad Suin, MS (the first Coordinator of the S2 Biology Program), Prof. Dr. Marlis Rahman, M.SC; Prof. Dr. Sitti Salmah, Prof. Syahridal Dahlan, and others.

The first postgraduate program at Andalas University was affiliated with Bogor Agricultural University, initiated by Prof. Dr. Ir. Yurnalis Kamil, M.Sc (Andalas University) and Prof. Dr. Ir. Handi Hakim Nasution, M.Sc, which led to the establishment of the Andalas University Postgraduate Program. The Agricultural Master's Program was then established, followed by other master's programs at Andalas University. In 1994, the S2 Biology Program was established, along with the Chemistry Master's Program, which was part of the Andalas University Postgraduate Program. At that time, each master's program was managed by a postgraduate coordinator appointed by the Rector. Before the S2 Biology program was moved from the Andalas University Postgraduate Program to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the coordinator was Prof. Dr. Syamsuardi, M.Sc. With the regulation of the Rector of Andalas University number 2 of 2012 regarding the implementation of Monodisciplinary and Oligodisciplinary Postgraduate Study Programs, all master's programs in FMIPA, including Biology, are managed by the Dean of FMIPA.

Implementation of the Master's Program in Biology under FMIPA UNAND

The first implementation of the S2 Biology Program under the management of the Dean of FMIPA, Prof. Dr. Edison Munaf, M.Eng, began in 2013. Each S2 Program was led by a coordinator selected by the Master's faculty and proposed to the Rector. The first coordinator of the postgraduate program in Biology was Prof. Dr. Dahelmi, MS (Rector of Andalas University Decree Number: 660/III/D/UNAND-2013 dated March 25, 2013, regarding the appointment of the Coordinator of the Biology Department's Postgraduate Program for 2013-2017).

From 2013 to 2015, administrative activities were carried out in one of the FMIPA UNAND Secretariat rooms under the coordination of the FMIPA Postgraduate Coordinator chaired by Prof. Dr. Syumaryati Syukur, M.Eng, and secretary Dr. Zozy Aneloi Noli, MP. Each master's program was coordinated by the postgraduate coordinator of the respective department, and the S2 Biology Program was managed by Prof. Dr. Dahelmi. At that time, some lectures had been moved to FMIPA, there was a dean's room, and the S2 Biology Program was taught on the third floor of the department, and the postgraduate lecture room was still used.

The results of the Management Meeting and evaluation of the learning process of Master's Program students by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) for the period of 2016-2020, Prof. Dr. Mansyurdin, MS, produced brilliant ideas and new hopes for the implementation of the learning process. The evaluation results of the learning process management, which was coordinated by the faculty coordinator, turned out to be inefficient. With the dean's policy that the management of the four Master's Programs in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics is now under the supervision of their respective departments.

The Master's Program in Biology in 2017 was coordinated by the Head of the Master's Program in Biology, Dr. Jabang Nurdin, M.Si (Rector of Universitas Andalas Decree No.: 981/III/D/UNAND-2017 dated March 3, 2017, regarding the Appointment of the Head of the Master's Program in Biology at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Andalas, for the period of 2017-2021). The Master's Program in Biology is implemented under the department head, along with the Bachelor's and Doctoral Programs.

Starting in 2016, under the leadership of Dean Prof. Dr. Mansyurdin, after the Faculty of Pharmacy moved to a new building, with the dean's successful negotiation, some of the pharmacy building was used for graduate courses in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, including seminar rooms and courses at the dean's office have been moved to the new building. The central graduate courses room is still used for graduate courses in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

The Master's Program in Biology has a first B accreditation certificate, dated August 11, 1998, based on the Ministerial Decree through BAN-PT No.: 01259/Ak-I.1/UADBLI/VIII/1998 valid until August 11, 2003. In 2003, thanks to the hard work of the academic community of the Biology Department, FMIPA Unand won the TPSDP Batch III grant (2003-2006) for the development of the study program and the development of teaching staff in accordance with the new paradigm and Long-term Higher Education Development Framework. This was followed by the second accreditation on May 29, 2009, based on BAN-PT No. 003/BAN-PT/Ak-VIII/S2/V/2009 valid until 2014. At the time, the Master's Program in Biology was managed under the Central Graduate School, Univ. Andalas. Since 2013, the Master's Program in Biology and Doctoral Program in Biology, which were previously under the Graduate Program at Unand, have been relocated under FMIPA UNAND. The Master's Program in Biology applied for re-accreditation with a B accreditation certificate, which was valid from November 2, 2014, to November 1, 2019, based on BAN-PT No. 038/BAN-PT/Akred/M/XI/2014.

Sejarah Awal

Program Magister/Prodi S2   Biologi Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (FMIPA), yang pada mulanya berdiri  pada tahun 1994. Lahirnya Prodi S2 Biologi dalam rangka kebutuhan pendidikan lebih lanjut dan pada saat itu Prodi S2 Biologi belum ada di Sumatera. Dengan kesepakatan dewan dosen, Jurusan Biologi membuka Program Magister/Prodi S2 Biologi yang digagas oleh beberapa dosen Prof. Dr. Nurdin Muhammad Suin, MS (Koordinator Program S2 Biologi pertama), Prof. Dr. Marlis Rahman, M.SC; Prof. Dr. Sitti salmah, Prof. Syahridal Dahlan, dkk.

Pasca sarjana Unand pertama kali beraviliasi dengan Institut Pertanian Bogor yang digagas oleh Prof. Dr. Ir. Yurnalis Kamil, M.Sc (Unand) dengan Prof. Dr. Ir. Handi Hakim Nasution, M.Sc dan terbentuk Pascasarjana Unand. Bersamaan dengan itu, berdirilah Program Magister Pertanian, kemudian diikuti program magister lainnya di UNAND.  Kemudian pada pada tahun 1994, berdiri Prodi S2 Biologi bersamaan dengan program magister Kimia, yang berada pada Program Pascasarjana Universitas Andalas. Masing-masing program studi magister pada saat itu, dikelola oleh koordinator pasca yang diangkat oleh Rektor. Sebelum kepindahan Prodi S2 Biologi dari Program Pascasarjana Universitas Andalas ke   Fakultas MIPA koordinatornya adalah Prof. Dr. Syamsuardi, M.Sc. Dengan adanya peraturan Rektor Universitas Andalas nomor 2 tahun 2012 tentang penyelenggaraan Program Studi Pascasarjana Monodisiplin dan Oligodisplin semua program studi magister FMIPA pengelolaanya dibawah dekan FMIPA termasuk Biologi.

Pelaksanaan Program Magister Biologi dibawah FMIPA Unand

Penyelenggaraan Prodi S2 Biologi pertama dibawah pengelolaan Dekan FMIPA  Prof. Dr. Edison Munaf, M.Eng dimulai pada tahun 2013. Masing-masing   Program Studi S2 dipimpin oleh koordinator yang dipilih oleh dosen Magister dan diusulkan ke rektor. Koordinator program pascasarjana Biologi pertama Prof. Dr. Dahelmi, MS (SK Rektor Universitar Andalas Nomor: 660/III/D/UNAND-2013 Tanggal 25 Maret 2013, tentang Pengangkatan Koordinator Program Pascasarjana Jurusan Biologi 2013-2017.

Selang tahun 2013 – 2015  kegiatan administrasi perkantoran dilakukan pada salah satu ruangan Sekretariat FMIPA UNAND dibawah Koordinator Pascasarjana MIPA dengan ketua Prof. Dr. Syumaryati syukur, M. Eng dan sekretaris Dr. Zozy Aneloi Noli, MP. Program Magister masing-masing jurusan dikoordinir oleh koordinator pasca jurusan dan Prodi S2 Biologi dibawah pengelolaan Prof. Dr. Dahelmi. Pada kondisi ini, perkuliah sebagian sudah dipindahkan ke MIPA, ada ruangan dekanat, dan untuk Prodi S2 Biologi kuliah dilantai tiga jurusan dan ruangan kuliah Pascasarjana masih juga digunakan.

Hasil Management Matting dan evaluasi proses pembelajaran mahasiswa Program Magister oleh dekan FMIPA Periode 2016-2020 Prof. Dr. Mansyurdin, MS, menghasilkan pemikiran yang cemerlang dan ada harapan baru untuk penyelenggaraan proses pembelajaran. Hasil evaluasi tentang penyelenggaraan proses pembelajaran yang dikoordinir oleh koordinator fakultas ternyata kurang efisien. Dengan kebijakan dekan bahwa ke empat Program Magister Biologi, Kimia, Fisika dan Matematika sekarang pengelolaannya dibawah Jurusan masing-masing.

Prodi S2 Biologi pada tahun 2017, dikoordinir oleh Ka-Prodi S2 Biologi Dr. Jabang Nurdin, M.Si (SK Rektor Universitar Andalas Nomor: 981/III/D/UNAND-2017 Tanggal 3 Maret 2017, tentang Pengangkatan Ketua program studi S2 Biologi Fakultas MIPA Universitas Andalas, periode  2017-2021). Program Studi S2 Biologi pelaksanaan dibawah ketua Jurusan bersamaan dengan program studi  S1 dan program studi S3. 

            Mulai tahun 2016, dibawah kepemimpinan Dekan Prof. Dr. Mansyurdin, setelah Fakultas Farmasi pindah ke gedung baru, dengan keberhasilan negosiasi dekan sehingga sebagian gedung farmasi sudah digunakan untuk perkuliah Pascasarjana MIPA, termasuk ruang seminar dan perkuliah di dekanat sudah dialihkan ke gedung baru tersebut. Ruang perkuliah Pascasarjana pusat masih digunakan untuk perkuliah pascasarjan MIPA

Prodi S2 Biologi memiliki sertifikat akreditasi B pertama, pada tanggal 11 Agustus 1998, berdasarkan SK Menteri melalui BAN-PT No.:01259/Ak-I.1/UADBLI/VIII/1998 berlaku hingga 11 Agustus 1998 sampai dengan 11 Agustus 2003. Tahun 2003 berkat kerja keras sivitas akademika Jurusan Biologi, FMIPA Unand berhasil memenangkan grant TPSDP Batch III (2003-2006) untuk pengembangan program studi dan pengembangan staf dosen sesuai dengan paradigma baru dan Kerangka Pengembangan Perguruan Tinggi Jangka Panjang. Kemudian dilanjutkan Akreditasi kedua pada tanggal 29 Mei 2009 berdasarkan SK BAN-PT No.003/BAN-PT/Ak-VIII/S2/V/2009 hingga 2014. Pada saat Prodi S2 Biologi pengelolaannya berada pada Pascasarjana Pusat, Univ. Andalas. Sejak tahun 2013, Prodi S2 Biologi dan Doktor Biologi yang sebelumnya berada di bawah Program Pascasarjana Unand, dialihkan posisinya menjadi di bawah FMIPA UNAND. ProDI S2 Biologi kembali mengajukan reakreditasi dengan sertifikat akreditasi B, yang berlaku sejak tanggal 02 November 2014 sampai dengan 01 November 2019 berdasarkan SK BAN-PT No.038/BAN-PT/Akred/M/XI/2014.
